Plus-Size? 3 Reasons You Should Take Ballet

“Ballerina” is almost synonymous with “thin”. Adult ballet students, however, come in all shapes and sizes. If you’re plus-size, you should never be shamed or self-conscious about joining adult ballet. Here’s 3 reasons why:
1. You challenge the norm.
Since there is so much pressure to be thin in ballet, why not join a ballet class out of sheer defiance? Your bold move will show you that you’re not afraid of a challenge, physically or socially. For example, once viewed to be a whites-only art form, incredibly talented black and Latina ballerinas are making a name for themselves because they refused to back down to underlying prejudices. Your example may inspire other prospective plus-size students to throw caution to the wind and do something they’ve always wanted to do.
2. It’s more fun than traditional aerobic exercise.
If weight loss is your goal, there is no better place to get a full-body workout – and it’s not boring! You have the opportunity to stretch, sweat, and shape up to beautiful music and movements that will improve not only your waistline, but your motor skills too. If you’re tired of the gym, do not hesitate to join an adult ballet class! You will be accepted and never have to pick up a dumbbell again.
3. Your self-esteem will increase.
Okay, so maybe you don’t charge into the studio with pride, but you feel out of place. Stay anyway, because what you accomplish in ballet will translate to other areas of your life. Terrified of bikini season? Train yourself to wear a leotard in class, where you won’t be judged, until you feel confident enough to shed your shorts on the beach (and not care what anyone thinks)! Maybe you’ll speak up more, demand that raise at work, or ask him out. Even if your goal is not to drastically alter your dress size, you will feel good and more fit!
Don’t let anyone or any institution keep you from trying something new. Adult ballet class welcomes students of all sizes and abilities.
