How To Build Confidence As An Adult Ballet Dancer

Ballet can be intimidating. Many of the movements are difficult and unnatural, but adult dancers don’t have to master ballet technique to build confidence. Everyone has the tendency to be hard on themselves in ballet class, but there’s no reason to constantly feel inadequate. There are many ways to build confidence as an adult ballet dancer.
Pat yourself on the back
Ballet is not easy. Every time you come to class, you’ve made a choice. You have chosen to do something healthy and positive for yourself. Many don’t even try, so give yourself more credit. At least you showed up!
Be prepared
You can’t expect to reap all the benefits of class if you are perpetually late and unprepared. Arrive 10-15 minutes before class to do a warm-up. Practicing mild stretches and breathing exercises prepares your body for the physical demands of class. The more prepared you are, the more confident you will feel.
Positive affirmations
Don’t entertain negative self-talk. When you experience fear and insecurity, tell yourself, “I can, and I will.” Repeating positive affirmations increases your confidence and willingness to try new things. It doesn’t matter if you do things perfectly. The most important thing is that you don’t allow fear to hold you back.
Don’t compare yourself to others
Everyone has different abilities and talents. Also, jealousy is pointless and unproductive; there will always be someone with greater turnout, better feet, higher leaps. Instead of competing with others, focus on your own progress. Set goals and apply yourself.
Remember why you dance
Why do you dance? Is it for fitness? To learn something new? Or is it an artistic outlet? Does it allow you to express yourself? Knowing why you dedicate your time and efforts to dancing can help you keep sight of what’s really important.
Dancing should be fun and fulfilling. Adult ballet class gives adults an opportunity to learn in a non judgemental atmosphere. Be open minded to new challenges and possibilities. The more consistent you are, the more confident you will become.
